Hungary’s Industrial Output Surges On High-Value Manufacturing

By Thomas Escritt | Updated on Oct 06, 2026 at 09:20 AM

Hungary’s industrial production jumped in August by more than double the amount forecast by analysts, helped by strong growth in the high-value automotive and electronics manufacturing sectors, the statistics office said.

Output increased 8.7% year-on-year, beating the 4.1% median estimate in a Bloomberg survey and hitting the fastest growth pace in almost four years, according to data released by the statistics office in Budapest on Tuesday.

The number was the highest since December 2022, when output grew by 9%. Production expanded by 1% from a month earlier.

The data is a boon for Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s new government as it grapples with a challenging fiscal inheritance and an economy that remains heavily dependent on its role as a supplier to the ailing German car industry.

After three years of lackluster growth under previous Premier Viktor Orban’s government, Magyar has set out ambitious plans. His cabinet aims to cut the budget deficit from an expected 7.5% this year to the 3% level needed to qualify for eurozone membership by 2030, while preserving many state benefits.

Finance Minister Andras Karman is due to unveil next year’s budget in the coming weeks.

Hungary may also be a beneficiary of the German car industry’s attempts to shift production to lower cost locations in Central Europe as well as the ramping up of operations at German, Chinese and Korean car and battery factories that were courted by Orban’s government.

BMW announced that it was launching a third production shift at its factory in Debrecen in eastern Hungary this month, meaning it will now operate 24 hours a day producing a new line of electric vehicles.

The statistics office said the growth came from high-value manufacturing rather than from lower-value processing industries like tobacco or food.

Growth was also weighted toward the most recent months. Despite the fast-paced year-on-year growth in August, for the first nine months it was a more modest 3.4%.
