JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon said any UK plan that would impose a windfall tax solely on British lenders and exempt international lenders would be unfair.
“I’m not in favor of things that lack principle,” Dimon said Tuesday in an interview with Bloomberg TV, arguing tax policy needs to be fair and consistent. “It’s easy to say charge my friends over here, I think that’s wrong.”
The UK already has “the highest tax rate for banks probably in the world,” Dimon said, as he again warned that any windfall tax would likely hamper the UK’s growth prospects.
His comments come as some in the City of London are said to be concerned the government may use this month’s budget to levy a windfall tax on the profits of domestic banks while excluding the UK operations of international lenders.
Earlier on Tuesday, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey told the heads of Britain’s big banks that he hasn’t yet decided · on whether to tax the sector in this month’s budget.
