Apollo Trades $35 Billion Private Credit in Push to Open Market

By Dani Burger and Kat Hidalgo | Updated on Oct 07, 2026 at 01:58 PM

Apollo Global Management has traded more than $35 billion since it began making markets in private credit, according to John Cortese, partner and co-head of corporate credit.

The desk has traded about 500 assets with 160 counterparties, Cortese said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. About a third of the volume involved loans that weren’t originated by Apollo.

The asset manager began to roll out daily prices across its $850 billion credit business this month . It’s a stark shift for the private credit industry, which typically only reports quarterly valuations.

“It’s inevitable that you’re going to need all pockets of capital to look at this opportunity,” said Cortese, who is responsible for the firm’s trading businesses. “And that also means liquidity. A large amount of investors are used to seeing transparency in what they own.”

The firm’s move reflects a push by some of the industry’s biggest players to make private credit more transparent and address fears over the value of loans underpinning funds.

“Generally our view is, the more transparency you give, and potentially liquidity you give, the better off the asset class, it tends to grow a lot better,” he said. “Liquidity is a virtue, not a vice.”

Apollo is in talks with · SpaceX, along with a number of other investors, to provide $40 billlion for the purchase of chips from Nvidia Corp. Cortese declined to comment on the deal.

“It’s not surprising that the largest companies are looking at this marketplace and saying, we’d like to find structured solutions for complicated buildouts or project buildouts, AI being one of them, chip financing being one of them,” he said. “There’s a huge amount of that happening. You’re going to see more and more.”
