Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has split the country’s finance ministry into two and made wealthy ally Kudakwashe Tagwirei a minister.

Tagwirei, who has been sanctioned by the US and UK for alleged corruption, will be Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Mnangagwa said in a statement on Thursday. Mthuli Ncube, who had held the post prior to the split, will be Minister of Finance.

Tagwirei was one of the most vocal backers of Mnangagwa’s successful campaign for a constitutional amendment to extend his term.
