Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called for the immediate removal of a statue mocking US President Donald Trump from the European Parliament’s premises in Strasbourg.
“At a time that calls for dialog and mutual respect, insulting partners at official premises is a failure to understand the times we live in,” Fico said in an emailed statement on Thursday.
The sculpture by a Danish artist that’s coated in gold depicts Trump naked, and sitting on the shoulders of another man and holding the scales of justice in one hand and a golf club in the other.
“Would the leadership of the European Parliament agree to the display of mocking depictions of the French president or the German chancellor?” Fico asked in the statement, adding that he doesn’t always agree with the US president.
Fico, whose country joined the EU in 2004, believes membership in the bloc is essential for Slovakia. At the same time, he is critical of Brussels for its energy policies, approach to migration and support for Ukraine.
