The US Justice Department is seeking a criminal indictment of former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson for lying to Congress, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The indictment is being sought by the department’s civil rights division, the person said.
A DOJ spokesperson said the department doesn’t confirm or deny investigations.
Hutchinson testified before Congress in June 2022, providing a gripping account of Trump’s behavior during the final weeks of his first term.
Hutchinson, then an assistant to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, gave the testimony in a House committee’s hearings on the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol, providing a window into the workings of Trump’s inner circle during the attack and days beforehand.
Her account of Trump that day included a portrayal of him lunging for the steering wheel of his armored vehicle, though Secret Service agents later disputed her account of the incident.
Punchbowl News reported earlier on the DOJ seeking an indictment against Hutchinson for her testimony.
