Lithuania plans to push for an EU ban on Russian grain transit and sanctions on Russian agricultural oligarchs, as Baltic states move to halt shipments through their ports.
“This is an unacceptable situation, one that has been tolerated until now on the grounds that EU sanctions do not apply to food products,” Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
Lithuania will propose banning such transit and adding specific Russian agricultural figures who support the war effort to the EU’s sanctions list, Sinkevicius said. He added that he has discussed the matter repeatedly with Latvia’s prime minister and that their positions are aligned, and that solutions are needed at the EU level.
