Spreading Fire Shuts Interstate 5 Freeway North of Los Angeles

A growing brush fire has shut Interstate 5 in both directions in north Los Angeles County, prompting evacuation orders and warnings as crews battle to bring the blaze under control.

The Danny Fire started at roughly 4:50 p.m. local time on Thursday near the unincorporated community of Gorman and has grown to 141 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The area is about 70 miles (113 kilometers) northwest of Downtown Los Angeles.

Highway 138 was also closed as crews worked to stop the fire’s spread. The left flank of the blaze is the priority for structure defense, with activity diminishing at the head, but still making small runs, CalFire said. The fire is 7% contained, according to Watch Duty , a disaster-tracking and alert platform.

The impacted area of I-5 is just south of a winding stretch of road known as the Grapevine, a major artery in California, connecting Los Angeles County to Kern County. Around 102,000 vehicles , including 30,600 commercial vehicles, pass through the Grapevine Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility on average each day, according to California Highway Patrol.
