Aaron Sorkin’s second Facebook film The Social Reckoning was a disappointment at the box office, taking in just $5.5 million in its opening weekend.
Sorkin wrote and directed the film, distributed by Sony Pictures. It stars Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg as a companion to the 2010 hit The Social Network, which won three Academy awards including best adapted screenplay for Sorkin.
The new film was inspired by true events and tells the story of a whistleblower who tipped reporters off to internal concerns that Facebook was prioritizing user traffic over safety. It also stars Jeremy Allen White as a Wall Street Journal reporter.
The Social Reckoning ranked fifth over the weekend, according to data compiled by Rentrak.
Universal Picture’s Other Mommy took the top place, pulling in $27.5 million over its first weekend. The horror film, based on a novel, stars Jessica Chastain.
