Billionaire Australian Family Buys Three Wine Brands From Penfolds Maker

By Ben Westcott | Updated on Oct 12, 2026 at 04:51 AM

Australian vintner Treasury Wine Estates Ltd. sold three brands from its extensive portfolio to the billionaire Oatley family, part of a strategy to shift focus back to its luxury origins.

The maker of the world-renowned Penfolds brand will divest Rosemount, Ingoldby and Secret Stone to A.G. Oatley Wines for an undisclosed amount, Treasury Wines said in a statement on Monday. The deal is expected to be completed within two weeks.

Treasury Wine Chief Executive Officer Sam Fischer has been looking to slim down the company’s portfolio of brands from 76 to a smaller “priority” offering of just 30 global and regional options. It is part of a strategy to play to Treasury Wine’s strengths as it seeks to cut down on third-party sales in China and reform its troubled US business.

Rosemount will be returning to its origins by rejoining the Oatley family, with owner Sandy Oatley describing it as a “full-circle moment.” His father Robert created the brand, building it over multiple decades into a successful winery before selling it.

The Oatley family are currently ranked 98th on the Australian Financial Review’s 2026 Rich List, with an estimated wealth of A$1.9 billion ($1.3 billion).
