Your editorial is right to warn that the recent arrest of an alleged Chinese operative accused of spying on the son of Taiwan's president is only the "tiny tip of the iceberg" when it comes to Chinese Communist Party espionage ("China Spies on Taiwan on U.S. Soil," Oct. 6).
The CCP is actively spying on Americans and dissidents and plotting sabotage on our homeland. But the CCP has another ace up its sleeve: subversion. Under the CCP, China is the largest police state in history, and it seeks to export its values and ideology abroad. China's United Front Work Department is the party's chief weapon.
China knows a massive surveillance state is hardly an attractive model for the rest of the world. Accordingly, the CCP wants to weaken the West from within. The United Front and China's Ministry of State Security, Beijing's version of the KGB, want to face a demoralized and divided America. The CCP's stated aim is overthrowing the U.S.-led liberal order.
Media outlets have reported that the federal government is currently probing alleged links between the radical Shanghai-based tech tycoon, Neville Roy Singham, and a constellation of groups that are making our politics at home more radical and more divisive.
Meanwhile, Groups like CodePink, the People's Forum and the Answer Coalition, which share some ideological overlap with the Democratic Socialists of America, are fundamentally opposed to the American way of life and our political traditions. The DSA seeks to abolish the U.S. Senate, empty prisons, open our borders and indoctrinate our youth. The radicalism espoused by the DSA and these other groups is a boon for our enemies.
But as the Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis famously said, "sunlight is the best disinfectant."
