Total to Seek German Wind Project Compensation Over Grid Delays

By Francois de Beaupuy | Updated on Jun 12, 2026 at 09:54 AM

TotalEnergies SE will seek compensation because of uncertainty over the grid-connection timeline for one of its German offshore wind projects, as the company reviews plans for wind farms there.

Wind-farm developers in European nations including Germany have dropped projects or tried to renegotiate better terms with governments in recent years as rising costs and uncertainty around grid access threaten the profitability of investments. Germany’s offshore wind lobby group has been pushing for a way to let developers walk away from such projects.

Total’s challenges in Germany are tied to the NordSee Energies 2 project in the North Sea where it planned to build a 1.5-gigawatt farm. Germany rejected Total’s request to improve the financial terms on costly offshore wind projects, Bloomberg previously reported.

Discussions with authorities to “determine the conditions under which the company could return the concession” for the NSE2 project “have not yet been successful,” the firm said in a statement late Thursday. It said it will pursue appropriate avenues to seek compensation for the delays and uncertainties related to the grid connection timelines.

Total also said that to protect its rights under the concession, it has submitted the application for approval of NSE2 and made the first 10% installment payment as part of the license agreement.

The company, which has six German offshore wind concessions , added that it remains committed to developing the other projects and to expand its power activities in the country.
