Senator Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Senate Republican leader, was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning, his spokesperson said.
Spokesperson David Popp did not give any details about McConnell’s condition, except to say he is “receiving excellent care.” McConnell was hospitalized earlier this year for eight days in February for “flu-like symptoms.”
McConnell, 84, announced he will retire when his current term ends in January. He had faced increasing questions about his health and ability to serve after several public incidents in which he seemed frozen and unable to speak. The Senate doctor cleared the Kentucky Republican for duty after the incidents.
Over the last seven years, he has fallen several times, sometimes suffering fractures and concussions. He missed Senate sessions due to the falls when he was GOP leader, a position he held from 2007 to 2025.
