US Issues Ethiopia Travel Advisory, Cites Long-Range Attacks

By Fasika Tadesse | Updated on Oct 08, 2026 at 06:20 AM

The US issued a security alert for Ethiopia, warning citizens to “reconsider” travel to the Horn of Africa nation due to the threat of long-range attacks as tensions with neighboring Eritrea escalate.

The embassy in Addis Ababa advised US citizens to avoid Amhara, Tigray and Afar regions and urged those already in these areas to leave or shelter in place until conditions improve.

“The embassy in Addis Ababa is aware of reports of possible long-range attacks directed at Ethiopian military installations on several occasions in October,” it said in a statement.

There are growing concerns that conflict could erupt between Ethiopia and its neighbor following reports of Eritrean troops crossing the border into Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region.

The two countries have traded accusations in recent weeks, leading to Ethiopia shuttering its consulate in Asmara and expelling 10 Eritrean embassy staff. Eritrea subsequently closed its offices in Addis Ababa.

The latest tensions follow renewed fighting in Ethiopia involving federal troops and forces affiliated with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, after the dissident group formed an alliance with six other armed movements.

In 2022, the TPLF and the federal government agreed to a peace deal, ending a deadly two-year war that claimed the lives of about 600,000 people.
